  1. Jesus dude. Cant imagine being in that poor guys position.

Im interested in the fact that they don’t seem to be worried about secondary explosions.

  2. I remember watching this YEARS ago and I always felt soo bad for the tanker.

I’ve heard that your buddies in combat are essentially closer to you than you are with family. So watching them in a burning tank knowing they can’t escape and being the sole survivor must be gut-wrenching.

He probably had alot of survivor’s guilt from this experience.

  3. Given that the engine was powered by petrol and not diesel, the gas burned readily and rapidly. Deadly combination.

  4. Flammability of Allied tanks was due to poor storage of materials in the tank, poor ammunition storage etc. once these lessons where learned they burnt less frequently. On the other hand, German tanks started to burn towards the end of the war as they were carrying loose ammunition on the turret floor.

Edit to add, it was also common for tankers to continue to fire on a target until it would burn to confirm its destruction. This is often seen in photos with evidence of multiple hits.

  5. Battle of Okinawa was the first incursion into the proper Japanese ‘home islands’. US for a while covered up just how many casualties they incurred: two marine and four army divisions were mauled beyond combat effectiveness losing 1/3 men – 50K infantry casualties including >10k KIA. 400 ships offshore were sunk or damaged + 10k navy casualties (5k dead). Air forces lost 750 aircraft. Fired off 2.5 months worth of total US ammunition production. Caused a redo of the casualty estimates for Japan invasion and one of the reasons for dropping the nukes.

  6. The fact Okinawa was so bloody is probably why the US used nuclear weapons to end the war. The planners thinking was that a traditional invasion of the Japanese home islands would have been an unacceptably horrible carnage fest. They were almost certainly right both for allied and Japanese civilian casualties.

  7. The guy digging trying to get to the driver I presume. What a horrible way to go if he had survived to that point
