  1. Bednarek mustve heard the wrong call or went off the wrong mark Coleman passed on the track he simply went out way too soon.

  2. I think he left on seeing the French runner instead of his own teammate. Started too early.

  3. This was unfortunate. I’m pretty sure they had excellent chances to win. Didn’t expect that to show up in the final standings. Edit: apparently passing the baton has been a problem. Still sad though.

  4. Kerley should’ve remained second leg. He and Coleman have been 1-2 for years, so why switch it up at finals? Kenny should’ve anchored. He has the speed.

  5. Just wanna know who is going to hold them accountable at this point. Stop lying about practice

  6. Bednarek must have misheard the call or missed the mark. Coleman only went out far too soon; he passed away on the track.

  7. If middle and high school kids can run clean relays, why can’t these guys who get paid and train to do this as their literal job in most cases?! Geezzz

  8. Embarrassing indeed!! Its like the US has won some races they’re not expected to, like Hocker in 1500m and lost some they were expected to win. That’s how sport goes sometimes.

  9. Someone in another sub listed all the DQs and failure to qualify going back like 15+ years for Olympics and World Championships…fucking horrible…

  10. Forever an issue. You’d think after decades of this happening coaches/athletes would figure it out

  11. From that angle looks like he has mistaken the French athlete for his teammate only thing I can think of that makes sense

  12. The commentator stating that Coleman “just couldn’t catch him” is the dumbest take I’ve ever heard.

In relays the timing is based off the passer, but as the receiver it’s your responsibility to take off on time. If you make it to the end of the exchange zone and the baton isn’t in your hand then you fucked up 1 of 2 ways.

    1. You left early. Simple as that.

    Or

    2. You half-assed practice and didn’t get your mark correctly.

I doubt athletes at this level didn’t take practice seriously, especially since our last medal was Athens. So really this is all on Bednarek

  13. Inexcusable coaching mistake by the US here. You don’t change your order unless you absolutely need to. If you have a change, you swap people. You don’t swap people and and the order.

  14. Seems like after fucking it up for the last 20 years youd think they would spend just a few extra reps practicing the handoffs

  15. This sucks for the team, not as mentioned by several, they did it to themselves. Carl Lewis is right, the system in place in the USA needs to be looked at. The rules are the rules and the team broke them.

  16. Why do we suck at this so much? I’ve seen High School teams perfect this. These are professional athletes figure it out.

  17. That’s why I watch the Olympics. Equal parts glory. Equal parts buffoonery.

First, if Bednarek thought the French runner was his guy, maybe he shouldn’t be in that football hiker position. Why isn’t he looking back normally like the other runners? Second, if he didn’t make a mistake, then he went too early, too hard or both.

Anyway, might make for a nice redemption arc in LA 2028.

  18. Inexcusable! Leaving early is ten times worse than leaving late. What the actual, how does this happen!?

  19. The US is deep with fast 100m runners. Should they select 3 for the 100m individual event and then 4 others whose only job is the relays so they can practice practice practice?

  20. The US’s 4×100 time in the semis would have won the finals. After the Semis they took Courtney Lindsey off the team and put in Bednarek who did this.

At what point does US Track and Field realize that subbing in runners for the 4×100 relay final isn’t working? How many more times do they need to mess up handoffs before they decide to come into the Olympics with a set team for that event? Would another 5 Olympics of bad passes be enough to get through to them?

If guys like Bednarek want to run the relay have them on it from the beginning and have the same team practicing it well before the Olympics. For the Tokyo games elite Canadian Andre De Grasse sprinter ran the individual 100m, individual 200m, semi for the 4×100 relay, and final for the 4×100 relay. If the US’s top sprinters want to do that great but if not stop messing with the team in between races.

4x100s are about both speed and good handoffs but US Track and Field clearly only values the speed part and it’s meant 20 years of no metals for the country with the deepest talent pool for the event.

  21. This is total and utter speculation – but I feel like with Bednarek’s style of looking through his legs (upside down), he may have confused the France kit with USA and took off when he saw France guy coming..
