“The International Olympic Committee’s executive board invited her to participate after learning of her efforts to defy the strict rule of the Taliban in her home country.”
Later that day:
“Taliban invited her to participate after learning of her efforts to defy the strict rule of the International Olympic Committee’s executive board.”
Shame on the Olympics they allowed genocidal Israelis and a child rapist in but somehow they don’t allow an Afghani just because she supports gender equality against her 7th-century minded government.
People want to defend this because it’s a cause we agree with and understand. But imagine what would happen if they got rid of this rule? The Olympics would turn to shit. You think China and the U.S., among others, wouldn’t have massive political propaganda machines going full blast throughout the duration of the Olympics? To say nothing of all the personal messaging you *wouldn’t* want to see plastered everywhere (e.g. “Gay people are an abomination before God”).
I get it. Her message is righteous. But if you open up the floodgates, the Olympics would look very very different.
(And honestly, her message probably got more attention *for* her being disqualified).
