What is the military objective behind Ukraine’s surprise incursion in the Russian region of Kursk?

The Ukraine army’s surprise charge into Russia this week was a stunning maneuver that caught the Kremlin’s forces unawares. The strategic goal of Ukraine’s biggest cross-border incursion in almost 900 days of the war remains unclear, but it counters Russia’s unrelenting effort in recent months to punch through Ukrainian defenses. For more information, FRANCE 24′ Jennie Shin interviews Patrick Bury, senior lecturer in security et University of Bath in the UK.

  1. Ukraine has made a strategic move, by removing some of the asymmetry from the situation. Previously, Ukraine had to defend the entirety of their borders from the western-most border with Poland and Russia to the eastern-most in Kharkiv (as well as defending the front lines in Ukraine). Russia did not think it had to do the same. Now it does. That's a strategic change.

  2. Has anyone noticed that there is literally nothing except the untrained conscripts and a tiny number of corrupt lazy cowardly FSB troops standing between the Ukrainian army and Moscow.. the entire effective and trained Russian army is bogged down in Ukraine. …clearly the Ukrainians have a well thought out plan, they have the logistics, they have the manpower… Putin should be terrified… the Ukrainian army could possibly be seen driving their tanks around red square. It’s only 300 km to Moscow… this could be the start of one of the most amazing, spectacular victories ever! None of the so called experts can figure out the motivation behind this invasion… maybe they are too conservative, scared, cowed, and small minded.
Prigozhin showed what was possible… if Moscow is the goal….it’s audacious, it’s game changing and it’s clear that Ukrainian intelligence was excellent, the Ukrainian army has caught the Russians unaware, unprepared and with their pants down.

  3. Its a sucide strat, those Ukrainian men are not coming back for this . They just want more attention from the west to give them more money lolz

  4. One of the most stupid questions ever asked as a headline:

What is the military objective behind Ukraine's surprise incursion in the Russian region of Kursk?

  5. I understand that, in order for the war business to continue, the anglo American empire needs these kinds of stunts, no matter how unrealistic they are.
This will backfire to the West, because the volunteering conscription will increase in Russia.
I'm not saying that the westerners are stupid by nature, I'm saying that greed makes people stupid.

  6. I think the boys are just visiting for a good cuppa and a few biscuits. Really hard to get out there.

What else could it be? That huge, unprotected, impossible to rebuild quickly power plant is the most valuable target by a factor of one thousand. Why are you avoiding the elephant in the room? Putin already knows all this and he is running very scared.
