I would have estimated that more than 1 in 4 Brits are complete morons so yeah this probably checks out.
Go for it then.
I said to my wife last night that during the closing ceremony, they should pick random people from each country for every event and they have to compete in that event in 4 years time.
4 years of practise, how good are you going to be?
Could get some interesting result. 82 year old Maureen for the Wrestling anyone?
I mean, I bet the break dancing competition a few people could qualify on. Looking at Australian standards .
pretty sure I can break dance at an Olympic level.
I’m mortified for them.
I could qualify for all of them. That is if everyone else were to die or go and start their own country.
Not so certain in my chances though.
If it was full time training and you took someone aged between 18-28, gave them a team of nutritionists, PTs, expert coaching in the specific sport, physicians, no medical concerns and no other commitments along with being paid and having their living expenses paid for then I think it’s quite possible that some someone with no training could at the very least get to games in their chosen discipline.
I used to do one of the sports listed competitively. I didn’t quite make the national youth team but I got pretty close at one point. At the very least I’d have a solid head start over Joe Bloggs off the street.
0% chance I could qualify for the 2028 Olympics if I only started getting back into it now. 0%.
Should I be surprised that the top 2 results involve shooting things?
I’d definitely qualify for shotput, as in the actual shot put!
Is sitting on my couch procrastinating an Olympic sport? If so, yeah, I could qualify.
I’ve been training road cycling for about 4 years and I’d still most likely die if I even attempted the Olympic course.
What sort of score do you get for a cannon ball in diving? I’m willing to give it a go in name of our country and have a vast level of experience.
If it’s that easy to become the best, then you’d think a league 2 player could become a premier League player by just trying a bit harder!
Sprinting 100 metres doesn’t seem that hard, I can already do about 30 metres and I haven’t even trained.
I’m surprised how high up 100m sprint is. And gymnastic events.
Team sports I would have thought should be higher, I’m 6’7 and could play basketball to a semi decent level so could probs go in for that, or be a football lurker.
Full time windsurfing/ sailing for 4 years would be up there too, anything where you don’t have to be genetically perfect to compete.
I wish I had this much confidence and optimism
Ok, I definitely wouldn’t be good enough for team GB at any sport, but there are a few sports where team GB doesn’t traditionally excel so could (hypothetically) someone with no prior experience in a given sport start training now and have a realistic chance of making team GB for 2028? What sport what be a good choice for them?
Has no one learnt not to give us a poll because we will not take it seriously 😂
The thing regular folks miss is that there are loads of people who’ve already been competing in these disciplines since they were 4 years old, have ideal physical traits, train for 30 hours a week, eat properly, do all the pre-hab and rehab that they can… and they STILL don’t qualify for the Olympics.
You’re not just trying to qualify over the people who made it. You need to qualify over the hundreds of others who were 0.1 seconds off qualifying last time.
Granted there are more barriers to entry in some disciplines than others, but the average person isn’t getting remotely close.
I could represent Great Britain in the Little Chef Olympic Breakfast (eating) category.
Most of us aren’t fit enough to do the volunteering outside the stadium.
What else are you talking about / said you could 100% do if you have any semblance of friendship group in the last couple weeks if not this?! Stand by it
Ooh I get to talk about my favourite weird thing, the Lizardman Constant. Basically in any poll about 3 to 5% of people are either so dumb they don’t understand the question, are actively trolling, or are flat out bonkers. It’s called that because that’s the percentage of Americans who answer the question “Do Lizardmen run the world” with a “Yes”.
Basically even when you remove the people too dumb to know what the Olympics are, people who are taking the piss and people who are just insane, about 1 in every 100 Brits, or more then 600,000 people, reckon they could reach the Olympics in the 100 metres.
On the rowing one, ah yes I too can increase my height to six foot five, and create a parallel universe where I received elite level coaching from a junior level, and built a life history of world level cardio and lactate resistance. Other than that, ez pz.
Are 1 in 4 Brits even of sporting age?
Statistically, if you aren’t between 15 to 40 you have a very low chance of qualifying for anything.
Also the stand out to me is football. People honestly think in 4 years of training they will make it to premier league level football and be selected for the national team?!
I know it’s all a bit of silliness, and most of them don’t really make it over the Lizardman’s Constant, but I’m surprised that 100m sprint is so high, and skateboarding so low. I put this down to the number of people who believe that (often when drunk) they can run away very fast, but usually end up falling over.
I may be able to compete straight away tbh.
Well if they brought in an event for fat blokes with knackered lungs, something like darts maybe or a sitting quietly reading competition.
It’s crazy when you think nearly 50% of people are obese. So there’s people thinking “yeah just need the gym once or twice and I will be there next time” is hilarious
Reminds me of our boccia player getting asked by a journalist “I’ve played bowls on the beach, do you think I would be great at this”
The biggest shock here is 6% believing they could qualify for the 100m. We are talking about competing against some of the fastest humans who have ever existed. Obviously with the other sports it’s plain stupid because these athletes will have trained their whole lives. But with the 100m it’s on another level, complete and utter lunacy. These athletes have trained their whole lives AND won the genetic lottery.
