Clickbait meets populism and extremism – TikTok and politics | DW Documentary

TikTok is continuing its rapid growth. What political role does this platform play? Accounts operated by politicians from the Germany’s right-wing AfD and Austria’s right-wing FPÖ have the widest reach. At the same time, the parties are also gaining ground in election polls in Germany and Austria.

Clickbait meets populism and extremism: What will this lead to? Who is standing up to it, and at what cost? In the documentary “Reclaim – The Struggle for Democracy on TikTok,” we head into the populist rabbit hole. The team traveled to Austria and Germany and spoke to activists, political actors and experts such as sociologist Aladin El-Mafaalani and extremism researcher Julia Ebner. We show how right-wing populists use TikTok to spread their messages and shed light on the impact it has on the political landscape and on young people.

  2. As an indigenous Mexican I can't blame them. Germany cares more about others than those who are foreign. The German government is to blame. I'd be xenophobic too if let's say White Europeans started to move to Mexico and the government was excusing their crimes and their sexual crimes. I'd feel as if they care more about foreigners than us.

  3. I consider myself centre-left to left-wing but I notice this video uses the term right-wing and far-right-wing interchangeably. The world is already polarized as it is, why conflate regular right-wing people with far-righters? In several instances something along the lines of "young people drifting to the right" is said. I don't think there is anything wrong with that in itself, I don't agree with most right-wing views, but it's a long way towards far-right extremism. Why not say "young people are drifting to the far-right", that is something that ís distressing. To me, this wording only fuels more polarization. Lots of quotes like these can be taken out of context and mis-used by the far-right, so good job..

Also, like other commenters are saying in crude terms, it would be interesting to do a piece on the far-left. I'd like to see our loonies, because it's always smart to take a good look at yourself and see what criticism from the other side is valid and what isn't. Ignoring criticism from the other side of the aisle and just keep doing the same will only invite new critisism, and thát also contributes towards polarization. This generation only sends through Tik-Tok, both the left and right, not many actually bother to go into dialogue with each other.

  4. I wont smile in Germany….Wait I was there in the 90's USAF and German's did not smile much..that was before Tik Tok…But Germans are serious people for the most part. Germans are great !

  5. Not just the UK then that gets called far right extremists

Nothing to do with the logical conclusion that if all infrastructures are on their knees accepting an extra 100,000 a year from EU overspill may not keep people who can't get a dentist appointment or doctors appointment happy at least in my opinion

  6. I think people generally are aware that you only find political propaganda and extremism on TikTok. If you find yourself unironically on the platform, it should give pause for introspective.

  7. I think any sensible human finds it hilarious that you don’t understand why people are being drawn to the far right it’s quite simple. They’re the only party that has sensible policies for the natives of their own country if the left or center had done something sensible and you wouldn’t have any need for the far right

  8. The most easily manipulated among us will always be the weakest point in any democracy. Anybody who says they have a favourite influencer, is easily manipulated. Anybody who sees the world in binary terms is easily manipulated. Anybody who thinks that their emotions are a good replacement for rational thought, are easily manipulated. Most of us think we are immune to manipulation, but advertisers manipulate us every single day – and they've been doing so for so many decades now that most of us cannot truly recognise manipulation.

It is a rocky road ahead of us and all we can do is arm ourselves with as much knowledge about manipulation methodologies as we can find.

  9. Ironic as I saw another video that did a study on how each platform is perceived, and Tiktok was overwhelming liberal. Only X was seen as roughly equal amounts conservative and liberal

  10. For me, nazi and woke ideologies are both used as closed systems and propaganda. How about saying no to both of these and build your own independent mind through research in books and critical thinking.

  11. It's so funny to me that they take agency away from individuals on the right by saying that they have been brainwashed and radicalised. Which just shows how the left operate because that's how they think of people and how they do politics. When in reality, on the right they say what people are saying or thinking which is why they watch more of the same but on the left it's all about convincing people to have a different view to that of which they already have. This is why they attack Popularism and see the right as doing what they do. An algorithm that pushes what the user wants to see instead of what the platform wants the user to see creates a true representation of the beliefs of people and this exposes the issue with the left and left wing social media.

  12. After seeing video tiktok etc… to understand it properly , u must read the book.

Imagine thinking one's understand Shakespeare or lotr just by watching the movie😅😅😅

  13. It's interesting that people who get involved are later hired. And where does the money come from? The billionaire class? Russia? China? Obviously, they aren't getting lots of money from grassroots fundraising.

  14. Youth generations are always inside all problems and difficulties wages in their's fatherland. They have ultra rights to condemning dangerous phenomena which attacking their's interests in their fatherland..Holocaust occurred during WW2, not nowadays… had not a relationship to AFD & and the right political wing in European countries demanding.. preserving European followers' interest, European cultural, streets security. ☪️ Islamophobia is a dangerous project and obvious phenomenon in European countries.. if European peoples attend or not

  15. George Orwell's "The masses maintain the brand, the brand maintains the media, and the media controls the masses" no longer makes any sense in a world where algorithms create the masses and promote all kinds of brands without needing the old media. Media control was inefficient, porous, and open to criticism from within and without. Algorithms are very efficient, they exist and operate in an imperceptible environment, and criticizing them is useless because they only promote what can increase the wealth and power of their owners.
