I was having a convo with someone on the “Soccer” Reddit page about failed transfers

Coutinho was brought up as one of the many failed transfers , I looked at some numbers and in 18/19 (His first full season) he played 3300 mins and got 16 G/a , so his numbers seem decent

What exactly went wrong from that point ?

  1. Forced to be a winger when he was never meant to be one. Honestly if flick’s system was used back then he would’ve fit great.

  2. This is exactly what’s gonna happen with olmo, an inside forward forced to play on lw

  3. i think barca officials wanted the team to play 4-3-3 for some reason but Coutinho’s best position is LM

  4. Typical EPL overrated players. He looked good in EPL because there’s space. In Spain he choked against low blocks because he lacks technicality. He shined few times when the opposition wasn’t good enough and gave him space to twirl around and curve it but most teams in Spain don’t give you room in defense. Same with Hazard, came from sailing through high lines with mediocre defenders to playing against low blocks for 90 min, he got bored and stopped caring. There’s a reason Pep made EPL a one horse race. Even a little bit of technicality makes most teams in EPL collapse. It’s entertaining for the ball to be going quickly back and forth but against other top leagues, EPL teams are mostly inferior. I mean if Coutinho was any better than we saw, he’d be kicking ass right now but look where he is. The “playing out of position” excuse is just typical “player good management bad” nonsense. playing few yards away from your usual position doesn’t make you useless and doesn’t make you forget how to press and track back especially when you’re the highest transfer deal, but those are things he just didn’t do before because he is not that good.
