I thought the same as well

  1. Technically this is true, it’s just that the stroke we think of as ‘freestyle’ is the fastest and so everyone uses it.

  2. That’s what it means. You won’t get disqualified for using, e.g., butterfly or backstroke in freestyle. In video game terms, front crawl is the meta.

  3. When you were a kid, you were right! Not only can you use any of the other strokes, if you came up with a new one, you could use that, too.

  4. I read a book kinda about this when I was a kid that I can’t ever find so maybe one of y’all can help.

The main kid in it was an android or maybe a cyborg? And he was on the swim team in school, it was a whole to-do that, first of all, maybe he ought not have competed against the average kids, but also that he was doing a breaststroke and still beating everyone else in freestyle.

I do not remember anything else and I don’t think the swimming was the central plot.

  5. It does, the stroke they do in the freestyle races is called the front crawl, not the freestyle
