I remember having this poster on the wall as a kid which reminds me how inspiring was Michael Johnson to me. Still has the most unique technique while running, body upright, head held back, chest wide front, only his arms and legs moving, and his trademark golden shoes. Legend.

  1. I remember watching him run as a kid, thinking that no one would ever beat his record in the 200m.

  2. Deffo my favourite American athlete, he is also a mainstay on the BBC for commentating on the games so I think we are lucky to have him for the last few Olympics absolute legend….and as loved here as he is in the states!

  3. Watching him in ‘96 kicked off a lifelong love of the Olympics for me. A 9 year old boy absolutely astonished that someone could do that with two feet and a heartbeat. I’m glad he’s still with us as strokes can be nasty.

  4. He is the nicest, kindest man.

Always ready with a smile or an encouraging comment.
    An exceptional person.

  5. He was amazing, he still does the bbc coverage and is really great to listen to his analysis of what the runners are going through, very similar to John McEnroe in tennis you know you can trust that he knows what he’s talking about..

  6. Absolute hero. I’m in the Uk and as an amateur teenage athlete at the time, I idolised the man. As well as many others of course! But my life was complete last year when he replied to me on Twitter. Awesome!
