  1. I love these old tiled maps. The North Eastern Railway used to have tiled maps at their stations.

  2. I never realised this was here, i’ll have to go have a look at that, it’s pretty old but even the CLC (south route) from liverpool to manchester isn’t on there. possibly late 19th century map? or just missed off I wonder?

  3. Missing Glossop totally, and there should be a link between Stalybridge and Huddersfield.

  4. One of the reasons I prefer Manchester Victoria to Manchester Piccadilly. I used to love looking at this map as a child.

  5. I think that there is something similar in Doncaster.

I remember seeing it about 20 years ago when I had a spare hour whilst changing trains late on a Saturday night and thought I’d pop out for a quick bite to eat and drink somewhere.

2230 in Doncaster is a scary place. I made a very quick retreat back to the station and decided that I would remain hungry and thirsty, but alive.

  6. Look how well connected Goole was back then, with sailings to most of the main European ports.

It is in a pretty sad state now.

  7. I see the town I grew up in is on that wall. I think the station was cut as part of the Beeching report in the 60’s.

  8. Look at all the destinations that the ports travelled to!  Liverpool just does Belfast and IoM for passenger (Dublin is freight only) today.

Belfast, Newry, Dundalk and Drogheda are less than an hour’s drive from each other from the most northern and southern port, can’t imagine many having many passengers, though I’d assume the ships were much smaller than today’s vessels.

  9. Always nice to see the old Fleetwood station on a map, bit sad though. Cheers Beeching.

  10. Wish Ripon had a station when i was growing up. I guess we got the double decker 36, which was ok.
