So we are still trading with russia just with extra steps.
It would also be interesting to see a similar graph but with China, India, Iran and Russia to see where the biggest growth was but Im not sure if such data is available. From the EU data it seems like there is no change but from what we all hear there was a lot of substitution for Chineese goods. Perhaps the profile of what is traded with Russia has changed but we dont see that with just the volume.
It’s actually weird to label Turkey a Russian proxy as it is a NATO member.
How should i read this graph
It’s bad that Russia is still getting the goods it needs. But with middlemen added it atleast jacks up the prices they need to pay to get them.
Thinking this would look different was too naive in the first place, but surely our politicians must know their shit, right?
Superficially it would appear that trade has rerouted, but that would suggest those intermediaries have made little additional margin, and no substitutionality, neither of which sounds plausible. Can anyone substantiate either of those?
While it does look sus, it would be interesting to see longer trends. It can also simply be that this trend is looking the same from e.g. 2015 onwards.
I get the impression that some people in the comments would give a damn if Country X, officially sold young children to sex brothels and attacked other countries around them. They wouldn’t give a damn as long as it sold them cheap oil, “because oil prices jumped 12% chlip chlip :(”
If you want to live in a society you have to bear both the gains and losses of living in such a society.
