  1. As an Indonesian, the change throughout the past 20 years is massive. Back in 2003, we were just recovering from the Asian Financial Crisis with a GDP per capita of just 1000 USD and total GDP of just around 200 billion USD. In 2023 the GDP per capita is now 4300 USD with a total GDP of 1.2 trillion USD.

I was 3 back in 2003, and broadband internet wouldn’t go mainstream for another 10 years. I know friends that don’t have computers and always-on internet in 2010, relying on internet cafes to go online. Even back in 2015 I thought EVs wouldn’t come here until like 2030, but turns out by 2022 EVs are pretty much everywhere. I just hope the growth trajectory we’re currently in is sustainable.

  2. As soon as you download the PDF for any country you’re familiar with, and dive even a little deep into the data, you immediately realize how inadequate and misleading these indexes are.

This is true for more than just the U.S. but for the U.S:

60th ranked in “Freedom of belief and religion” while many things are to be said about the U.S. but freedom of religion is entirely protected, to the full extent of the law, there is no argument that you can make for 60th in the world. It does not have to be 1 or top 10 but 60th is absurd.

142nd ranked in “Non-discriminatory civil justice”, and I do believe that the justice system has flaws, but not 142nd or even close to that. This must be based on raw data, rather than actual analysis.

31st in “Freedom of opinion and expression”, and you can not be serious with that ranking, while the U.K. was 10th, while having much harsher freedom of expression rules, albit still very free.
