Indian PM Narendra Modi visits Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky | BBC News

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in Ukraine to hold talks with President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The trip comes just weeks after he met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

The visit is significant because Kyiv and some Western capitals had reacted sharply to Mr Modiโ€™s visit to the Russian capital in July.

Mr Zelensky was particularly critical, saying he was โ€œdisappointed to see the leader of the world’s largest democracy hug the world’s most bloody criminal in Moscowโ€.

  1. Russia invaded Ukraine, Putin driven by greed, fear and delusion.
Putin is responsible for nearly half a million deaths because of this, the majority Russian. With his attacks on children's hospitals, theatres where people sheltered, targeted funerals (even China condemned that one).
Putin has caused suffering for millions, has caused nearly 3 million of Russia's best people to leave, has assassinated and imprisoned opposition (including Navalny) and protestors, has closed independent media.

Putin broke the 1994 treaty in which Ukraine have up the nuclear weapons it held and in return, Russia agreed to:
    1) not invade Ukraine
    2) not try to change Ukraine's borders
    3) not attempt to change the Ukrainian government.
There were no caveats, no extra clauses. It was witnessed legally by the USA, UK, Belarus and others.

And still India does not condemn any of these. In return India gets fossil fuels from Russia at half price. This is despite India predicted to be one of the worst affected by climate change (and Russia's policy to sell as much fossil fuel as it can while it can).

There are reasons of course beyond not caring about the wider world outside India. If India condemns Russia then Russia potentially moves even closer to China which is building a strange hold around India with the Belt and Road initiative. However, China already provides the majority of tooling and microelectronics for Russia's invasion.

Modi is no Ghandi of course.

And India's trade with Russia, excluding the new expansion in self defeating fossil fuels which means India is paying not only for Russia's invasion of Ukraine, but is also paying Russia to badly affect India's climate (Russia's invasion of Ukraine has also released more CO2 than any country over the last 12 months amd puts the average Russian CO2 emissions per person higher than any other country in the world).

  3. The visit of the Prime Minister of India to Ukraine during the celebration of its national Independence is very significant.

India should play a bigger role in world politics and take the place of a permanent member of the UN Security Council instead of Putin's Russia!

  4. In the animal kingdom, among the same species, reaction to a dispute is constrained to a physical conflict. Humans are bestowed with the power of speech and dialogue, as exemplified by the leader of an ancient civilization! Jai Hind Mr. Modiji.

  5. This is just optics by modi to silence western allies. In reality India stands with Russia anyday and not Ukraine every Indian knows that.

  6. BBC is becoming too biased, false media. Why should Modi talk against Russia for invasion? Why not talk about NATO trying to encroach Russian territory?

  7. Some twisted journalists and media houses can be seen trying to put India down because they cannot digest that the leader of the truly secular Hindu culture is in government in India.

  8. Worst journalist in India by a mile and most likely one that supports LGBTQ!!! BBC always pick people to push their biased narrative!!!

Zalenski just wants money from India!!! Modi ainโ€™t dumb ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿฝ

  9. Narendra Modi suggested to Zelensky, with a hint of irony, that he should consider sending fighter jets to Russia under cloudy skies. Zelensky, catching the sarcasm, retorted, "What did India achieve when you sent Abhinandan into a similar situation?" Modi chuckled and replied, "He was shot down by Numan Ali Khan and then thrashed by Pakistani villagers like a mangy dog." Zelensky smirked and said, "Well, if public humiliation before the civilized world is the goal, it's certainly an intriguing strategy."

  10. Modi is funding Putin's war as we all know. We should All think about other destinations for holidays and tourism. And Big international business should also think very carefully before siding with countries that have No Morals.
