[OC] Which Countries Will Contribute to the Next Billion in Population?

  1. Data comes from the United Nations’ World Population Prospects. I calculated the absolute growth for each country between 2022 and 2037, and then determined their relative share in the next billion. I think it’s an interesting graph, but to be honest, it doesn’t tell the whole story, as the population at any given time already includes immigration (according to the medium variant projections). Perhaps I should have used natural population growth instead, but oh well. This was made in R, and the code is available on my GitHub.

  2. Dang. Great visualized data. Very beautiful.

5 counties counting for more than 40% is pretty wild. And none of them China, not what people would expect.

  3. This would be better to see it cross referenced with the current population in each of those countries.

  4. How do you account for countries with declining populations in the ‘next billion’? The numbers get a bit wonky since you are looking at percentages and there are many countries that should be represented as negative percentages.
