I'm certainly not a railway engineer or infrastructure expert. But here in Crystal Palace I'm getting confused. Seriously reduced services due to engineering works. But will this new tactic of stacking the track on the platforms pay off?

  1. They might just be leaving them there for ease later. There will be a big machine on the actual track laying ballast and another2+ taking up the old track and picking up the bits of track and laying them etc.

Then they will strap them and get the welders in to weld and grind.

I might be wrong but I’ve seen it before.

  2. It’s lifted out of place and then a train will come and take them away once the new track is ready.

Same reason why you see old rails left in the middle or around tracks, something comes to pick them up later.
