Ukrainian army’s newest recruits prepare for war | BBC News

Ukraine is experiencing huge pressure on its eastern home front, as it grapples with the sheer mass of men Russia has committed to the frontline.

The Ministry of Defence in London estimated there were 70,000 Russian casualties in Ukraine in May and June alone.

Two and a half years into the war, and Ukraine is desperate for more troops.
New army joiners are undergoing an accelerated programme, and it brought into force a new conscription law which lowered the age of men joining from 27 to 25.

The drive for younger conscripts has not hit this group of men; most of the new recruits are older.

The BBC has been brought to a secret training location in the Chernihiv region where the latest army intake is being fast tracked to the battlefield in the renewed effort to blunt Moscow’s grinding advance.

  1. REPUGNANT GARBAGE JOURANLISTS. it is NOT the biggest incursion into russia since WWII! IT IS THE GREATEST INVASION OF UKRAINE IN 2014 SINCE WWII. WORLD WAR II WAS CENTERED IN UKRAINE WHERE GERMANY WAS DEFEATED Ukraine was germany's FIRST PRIORITY IN WWII . NEVER "russia"

  2. The more experienced soldiers seem to be middle age (40s- early 50s) but the new conscripts actually look old. Not middle aged old. The direction of travel is worrying.

  3. Ukraine is running out of fighting age men and now reaching into the retirement homes. We knew this would happen, it was only a matter of time. Russia on the other hand, had more then enough men to keep the front lines well manned for a long time to come.

  4. Utter nonsense from the USA controlled bbc. Currently 4000 dead Ukrainians that entered Russia. The rest are surrounded. British and German tanks destroyed. The bbc spouts this nonsense for this American proxy war.

  5. Russians have 3, 4 times the population. You are fighting a much smaller country. So, yeah, the Ukrainians are struggling. You Russians have no honor. You tell the lie that you invaded Ukraine "in self defense", you with 6000 nukes. You are liars.

  6. Pokrovsky is almost done because men like those are being order to keep a position against a lot of Russian elite soldiers and PMCs. They are the ones on this front. Now it make sense why the russians are advancing Kms every day.

  7. Zelenskyy troops in Pokrovsk area (Pokrovsk is a key logistical hub that Zelenskyy is about to lose) mostly consist of hapless cannon fodder kidnapped off the streets. They are totally disorganized and demoralized. It's a cumulative effect of an attrition strategy implemented by Russians. For a long time it seems nothing changes on the map, but then we see rapid collapse. "The main object of operations should not be the territory, but the enemy's army. If the army runs out, the territory will come by itself. " Helmut von Moltke Senior. This war proved once more that old Moltke was right.

  8. its so sad to see that all of these new recruitements were working all their lives to live in retirement after, instead you have them going to war without enjoying retirement.

  9. It's ridiculous that the Ukrainian mobilization age was just lowered from 27 to 25, when most Western countries, it's 18. I feel it's shameful for the younger Ukrainian men to be dodging the draft in other European countries and at home in Ukraine. There is a huge manpower shortage, and younger men have far more agility, and are usually not married and do not have children. This is a righteous fight and they are not defending their own country, and this makes me really frustrated and angry as an American when we've lost many. I understand that Ukraine currently has enough weapons and ammunition, but they are lack soldiers. They need to lower their mobilization age to 18 like other NATO countries.
