Paddington in Peru Trailer – Why is Paddington applying for a British Passport to travel to Peru when he’s also a citizen of Peru?

  1. Paddington arrived from South America as a stowaway on a lifeboat, so he would have been an undocumented migrant. He may not therefore be a citizen of Peru. I assume he was eventually granted Indefinite Leave to Remain which allows him to apply for a British Passport.

Not sure this is a casual subject though.

Or, he’s an imaginary bear, and it’s all for the story.

  2. Does he not travel to London as a stowaway, which would imply that he doesn’t have a passport?

  3. He’s an illegal immigrant, honestly he’s just lucky he never got shipped back when he applied for the passport

  4. Because “Paddington and the Trip to the Peruvian Embassy” which is about 30 minutes away from Notting Hill where he lives – just wouldn’t have the same ring to it and ultimately fall a bit short of feature film length?

  5. You know, I think there was an episode of the stop motion show where they wanted to go on holiday to France and were trying to smuggle Paddington on board the ferry by getting him to pretend to be a teddy bear, but he didn’t really understand and–shock! The border police have found him, and… Oh, it’s okay, because it turns out Paddington *does* have a passport, because how else did he get to Britain from Peru otherwise? They just never thought to ask him.

  6. I hope this is as good as the last two.

Who needs the Godfather Trilogy when you have Paddington ?

  7. He would still need *a* passport to get into Peru – so it’s either get a UK one or go to the Peruvian embassy and get their one (he arrived as a stowaway so presumably didn’t have one already). South American beurocraxy is a *nigjtmare* – Paddington will have to have everything notarised, witness, and translated into Spanish. The cost of simply getting the forms in order would immediately eclipse the £80 for the British passport and, I fear, would be well beyond the capabilities of a notoriously scatterbrained bear.

  8. In Peru he was just a bear, the explorer taught his family how to talk etc but even after that they lived in the woods. He wasn’t a part of human society in Peru as he is in England so he never would have had citizenship or a passport.

  9. I think the true question is:

What level of sentience does an animal need, to get a normal passport rather than a pet passport?

  10. Assuming he’s a citizen of Peru and has a Peruvian passport, he would still need a British passport to get back into Britain, assuming he plans to return. Or he could get a visa, or stow away… but it’s easier to get the passport before leaving if he’s eligible for one.

  11. Where has Mrs Brown gone is my question, she’s the one who wanted to keep the bear in the first place!

  12. Oh no!. I’ve had it figured out since childhood. Then 1 simple reddit post has broken my life 😭

  13. I went to a set visit of this last year and it’s insane how they managed to transform a forest on the outskirts of Watford into the jungles of Peru, it definitely gave me a new found respect for all the people who work behind the scenes on the sets
