Did officials set the blocks down? Seems like an official should be responsible for the location, then the runner can adjust the feet.
I believe the distance difference between adjacent lanes is a little less than 8 meters, at least over a whole lap.

What a shame and he lost the gold because of it. Only Americans man remember back in the Olympics shamier little almost got us DQed in the 4×400 mixed relay because she was not at all in the right zone for the relay exchange
