It’s a Shiite religious banner associated with the figure Imam Hossein and is generally for mourning during the month of Muharram. It is not a Hamas or ISIS flag as some have erroneously claimed online

Either an idiot or some kind of martyr complex
Actually, those things are the same

Does anyone understand why they were DQ’d? Is it because the ban on religious displays?

I mean, the Paralympic committee even bans displaying of the Olympic rings, so it’s not a surprise they have an issue with this.

[Ya Hussain](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ya_Hussain)
It’s a religious flag, but the rules are rules. Similarly [Manizha Talash was disqualified](https://www.cnn.com/2024/08/09/europe/paris-olympics-refugee-breaker-afghan-women-intl-latam-spt/index.html) from the breaking competition for wearing a cape with the words “Free Afghan Women”.
He was disqualified for showing the cut neck gesture to his fellow competitors, not just for showing this flag.
He was also disqualified for unsportsmanlike behavior because he displayed a slice-neck gesture during competition. 2 strikes!
