Fun day, even though we only saw the lead pack for a split second, and the maybe 10-15 seconds for the pelaton to pass us. Still a fun day and great to see some top tier cycling without having to travel to far or spend anything and introduce the kids to the sport.

Being stood on a corner not far from a lay-by in which most of the support crew were parked and hydrating the cyclists, and having my two kids with me cheering the cyclists we got a lot of water bottles thrown our way (which the kids were very excited about!).

For purely scientific purposes (and blind curiosity) I took it upon myself to taste test all the drinks which were about 75-80% full still for Reddit’s benefit.

Global United: A citrusy mix. Kind of tasted like strong lemon squash with a bucketload of sugar.
Trek: Orangey. Tasted like off the shelf lucazade sport.
Elite: a vague berry flavour and salt. Lots and lots of salt. The only drink I’ve ever had that I felt more thirsty having drunk
Groupama: Water! WTF?!!?

There you go! I have no idea about the other teams or what magic snake oil they hydrate their riders with, but based on flavour alone I would compete for Global United (or at least which ever team threw us that bottle).

  1. Some bottles are water and some will be a carb mix (sometimes even a double dose of carb).

The water is sometimes just used to pour over yourself to cool down, especially in hot races.

Often in races the riders will have a sticker on their bikes showing what they need to drink and when.

  2. I’m watching tomorrow, but won’t be collecting, nor drinking, from discarded bottles

  3. Do they all have lids ? Shame you didn’t get any gels to try. Once had an expresso gel on a ride and thought I was Luke Skywalker on endor

  4. Ahhh shit! I totally forgot about this and it went by the main road right by my house. Doesn’t it end tomorrow?

    Can’t believe it…

  5. You’re just…. Drinking other people’s backwash? People you don’t know? Ten mins after the second plague?

    Okay.

  6. Eww people threw their bottles of drink away and not only did you pick them up and take them home but you tasted them too?!

Do you realsie how weird that is? 🤨

  7. Is that what was holding up traffic on the way to Suffolk this afternoon? Why tf must they plan these races on key roads

  8. Couldn’t be arsed reading your post but came here to say I haven’t seen a water bottle like that since the 2000s. I miss chewing on the lid lol

  9. Another Northamptonian I see. I was hoping to catch the race when it went through Duston but it was at the wrong time of day for us annoyingly
