Yup, stuff like this happens sometimes. There are quite a few coins that looks similar to euros. Can’t always catch it.
2 Bulgarische Lev = 2 Deutsche Mark = ~1 Euro…
Happened to me too as a cashier, only noticed because it is a slightly different size and I spotted it in my row of coins. Luckily I noticed because of the way my till was set up, but the customer who gave it to me definitely didn’t and I also missed it for presumably a few hours.
It’s Bulgarian currency and looks deceivingly similar to 2€ coins, if you would’ve noticed straight away it could’ve been fixed but I’m not surprised nobody noticed the mistake.
As a Bulgarian, I carry two 2 euro coins with me because I can’t get rid of them here and I have more than once also confused them with our 2 leva.
The US penny is the same size as the German 2 Cent coin.

It’s now a lovely souvenir with a story to tell.
I’d keep it.
