Trump does have a gift. Ignore the specifics of policy and rhetoric.
He has found away to engage a base of voters that otherwise are not politically active.
And his rhetoric makes sense in that context. The reason we all hate it is because we are demographic that always votes, what we want to see is “adults” engaging in at least a high school debate if not a college debate.
His base, who wouldn’t vote if not for him and his “movement”—and will go back to not voting when his movement does out—by definition aren’t traditional voters and thus don’t respond to traditional appeals.
Very few politicians can find and convince 30%+ of the country, people who largely never voted before 2016, to become politically active.
By November, he won’t have anyone left in his staff. No one wants to be ridiculed online, incessantly, for praising Trump with obvious falsehoods and verifiable lies. They make themselves look irredeemably stupid, and they’re likely not being paid enough if at all by him.
