I don’t think I’ve seen one since about 1992, on a brown Ford Granada, driven by a man in his 90s.
Haven’t seen one in years, never thought they did anything either
Died at the same time the beaded car seats died out as well i think,
Oh dear lord. Halfords still sells them.
Presumably stacked next to the red warning flags to be waved in front of your horseless carriage if it exceeds 4 mph.
I’d never even heard of these, but it seems you can still buy them.
I’ve been using mine to protect me from 5g towers. /s
I saw one recently on a car being driven by a very old man.
Still used on Lorry’s carrying flammable liquids, beyond that I’ve never seen one!
About 8 years ago i had a Ford maverick from 2003, it used to give me static shocks on a regular basis when getting out of it, fitted one of those and the shocks stopped.
A friend’s sister had one on her car in the early 2000s. Mainly because she was an idiot.
It made such a horrible noise as it dragged along the floor, I would rather get a static shock each time getting out, than listen to that racket.
I remember asking my dad what they were, he explained, I didn’t understand. I still don’t understand.
Used to have one on a car in the 80s because I got awful crackling static shocks. Trouble was, I kept getting waved up by people who would yell “you’ve something hanging at the back!”
I just saw a video of a Cybertruck having its body at 120 V to (actual) ground when charging, so I hope they’re still around.
Given that wheel locks are back, these could reappear any day now
They’re important for air-to-air refuelling or if you need to park on a carrier
As long as you hold the metal of the door as you get out of the car you didn’t need one. I still have that habit to this day
I replaced mine in 1992 with a Garfield arse hanging out of the boot
Never heard of them and I’m 35.
I remember getting zapped several times opening the door of a car.
Lots of people saying these do nothing, but interestingly this is common for forklifts. Places that deal with any flammable materials will attach these to forklifts or drag a chain behind it.
More commonly though you’ll get anti-static or electrically conductive tyres, so you don’t need one of these.
Not sure if there’s really a huge need for car tyres though…
Serious question, do they work? I’m asking, because I get zapped every time I leave the car and touch the door.
Gone the same way as the plastic fingers that were put on the car boot, and the radiator grill red nose.
They do work, but only if your tyres are of a compound that insulates, so old, really old or nylon. When fuelling certain armoured vehicles, we had to ground the body with a steel bar before opening the filler cap.
I always get a static shock when I open the door on my old c-max and I’m wearing a particular shoe.
I need two of these, one for each shoe.
I have a friend with one on her car, she claims it stops her getting travel sickness.

Reminds me of my dads Vauxhall cavalier 😂
Legit don’t even know what I’m looking at.
I’m 32 years old.
