38. The Trump campaign seems to have realized that Vance is a target of ridicule, and so are trying to rebrand him in a way that’s more energizing to their base: creator of attention via outrage. The base needs their fill of this drug regularly in order to remain motivated, and this gives them that satisfaction.

    This also serves as a trial run for seeing whether they might be able to switch out Trump for Vance effectively in the future should Trump’s health fail. At some point there will inevitably need to be a changeover, whether that timeline is in months or years. I don’t think that Vance himself has the charisma to pull it off, but if his base can be conditioned to accept him as a source of their outrage fix, he can be a placeholder for a while until a more suitable replacement can be found.

    The correct response is to lean even harder into mocking him at every opportunity.
