HMRC! What’s going on?

What is going on at HMRC? All my life I've worked and had tax taken by PAYE. Never had this happen. How can it happen? Not only me, but lots of people I know have had tax demands for last tax year.
Is it my employer's fault or HMRC?

  1. Pretty straightforward. You earned more than what HMRC predicted for you last year. So now you have additional tax to pay.

Always worth keeping an eye on your estimated income on the HMRC app to make sure it’s not wildly inaccurate and avoid these unpleasant surprises

  2. Perhaps you are earning more interest on your savings than previously? As that’s income, income tax is due and this is outside the scope of paye. Normally at this time of year HMRC will have the data and will adjust for that.

Maybe worth checking your HMRC online account as the details will be there.
