It’s time to bring Shamima Begum home

The harsh treatment of the so-called brides of ISIS, and especially of Shamima Begum, raises critical questions about the application of transitional justice principles– particularly the balance between accountability, fairness, and societal reintegration. These issues come into sharp focus when Western governments, like the UK, refuse to allow these women to return and reintegrate into society, even depriving them of citizenship and effectively rendering them stateless. The sheer vindictiveness of this response undermines the moral and practical aims of transitional justice and unfairly scapegoats the women involved.
