Russia Ukraine War | Ukrainian Prez Zelensky Says ‘War With Russia Is Closer Than Some Think’ | N18G

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he believes the war with Russia is “closer to the end” than many believe and called on allies to strengthen Ukraine’s army. In excerpts of an interview with ABC News’ Good Morning America, set to be broadcast in full on Tuesday, the president said “I think that we are closer to the peace than we think … We are closer to the end of the war.” He added: “That’s why we’re asking our friends, our allies, to strengthen us. It’s very important.” Zelenskyy told ABC that Putin is “afraid” of Ukraine’s Kursk operation, in which it has taken more than 1,000 square km of Russian territory. Zelenskyy is in the US to attend sessions at the UN general assembly as well as to present a “victory plan” to US President Joe Biden and presidential hopefuls Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.

  1. I don't understand the rhetoric that the US they should contemplate reducing support for Ukraine. Are they not aware of the United States promises to Ukraine in 1994? I am not sure members of Congress or the Media are.

Ukraine had a huge nuclear arsenal, and it took years of political manoeuvring and diplomatic work by the US, starting with the Lisbon Protocol in 1992, to remove all these weapons and nuclear infrastructure from Ukraine. Under the Massandra Accords, In 1994 Ukraine eventually committed to full disarmament, including strategic weapons, in exchange for economic support and security assurances from the United States and Russia. All their nuclear arsenal, with the approval of the US, was handed over to Russia!.

It was always thought that with such security assurances from the United States (and Russia), nobody would seriously contemplate waging war or invading Ukraine, with the US (and Russia?) having their back. Unfortunately, when Russia effectively invaded Crimea in 2014 the US did not come to their aid, This was a huge mistake by the US. This resulted directly in the current war, as Russia took the US's non reaction to the Crimea invasion as a sign that the promises made by the US could be relied upon about as much as Russian ones to support Ukraine, could, and therefore they could invade Ukraine without consequences. Why it took so long for the US to get involved is a poor reflection on us. If anything, the US should be more involved instead of letting politicians try to override and welsh on its international commitments. Or are we telling the world that commitments on the world stage by one US administration are not binding on the next. That would be crazy.
