Luis Enrique (in his documentary on Xavi’s Barça last season): “Barça are not a dominant team and they are not a defensively good team. They have no defensive quality. They play long balls. Ter Stegen broke the record for long passes. They play like Eibar.”

  1. He’s right, this season is a lot different though. When he left Barça he had no more ideas and everyone new his tactics thats why Barça only managed the copa del rey that season in my opinion.

  2. I assume this was said during or before the match. Nothing wrong with what Lucho said here and he’s tactically right. Despite being a Barca legend, he has to say something motivational to his players and the club paying his wages.

  3. I do think sometimes we play too many long balls, but that is because the game is changing and so many teams now play the generic gegenpress style of football with a high press from the front. Which means sometimes you need to just send the ball up the pitch.

When we had Busquets, Xavi and Iniesta in midfield being fed by Dani Alves and Jordi Alba, and centre backs like Pique who are good on the ball playing out from the back then you can pass round the press but there aren’t many teams in the world that can permanently play Tiki Taka out from the goal keeper up to the final third.

  4. People are overreacting imo. This was clearly during the quarterfinals, and you say what you have to, to motivate your players and make them believe the opposition is shit/weaker.

  5. Enrique, please go tend to your farm in the farmers league. Your Dembele needs watering often so it doesn’t get withered.

  6. Nothing wrong in what he said because that’s his way of motivating his players to beat us and they did. I would even shit talk against my dad if we are playing against each other; that’s competitive sports for you

  7. And he is not “that wrong at all”.

Whenever we play against teams that pressed high , grind every interaction , and we cant have possession for long stretches of the games , this shit happened more often than not.

Flick however make it into more of a direct play and into more of an aggressive + oppressive + clinical goals on key moments. However it is still very early because our two biggest test (Bayern and Madrid) is when we are gonna see if we can compete against them.

I do believe we play a lot better than Madrid but they have the “Mentality experience” on their side as “i could be playing worst than you , had 2 shots on target for the whole game , be underwhelming, and still win”.

And i do think we have the quality to compete and have the right coach. As Raphina mentioned , mentality is extremely important and psychologist helps a lot

  8. Barca conceded a ridiculous amount of early goals last season from just punting the ball from the kick off, maybe he had a point.
