Why have Sam Chatto and Lady Louise not worn any medals with there uniforms? Both of there siblings have worn medals in civilian dress, so why don’t on uniform?

  1. That’s Arthur Chatto, Sam’s brother. He joined the Royal Marines 2 or 3 years ago.

    Lady Louise is in St Andrews University Officers’ Training Corps: https://www.army.mod.uk/who-we-are/corps-regiments-and-units/university-officers-training-corps/

    As for medals, it depends if they were issued any.

    There are, in particular order:

    Commemorative medals – like QE2’s [Jubilee Medals](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_Elizabeth_II_Platinum_Jubilee_Medal) or Coronation Medal;

    Order of Chivalry Medals – like the Knight/Dame Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire

    Service medals – for time served in the Armed Forces etc;

    Gallantry medals – for specific courageous actions in wartime.

    You can only wear what you’ve been issued. Both Arthur and Louise didn’t have the qualifying 5 years service in the Armed Forces ~~so they didn’t receive the Jubilee Medal or Coronation Medal~~. Nor have they spent enough time in the Armed Forces to qualify for a service medal, neither have they been on a military campaign so they don’t qualify for a campaign medal or obviously a gallantry medal.

    🙂

    ETA: Both have Jubilee/Coronation medals but *not* received for service in Armed Forces, simply for being Royal, so presumably they don’t want to wear them when in uniform – perhaps it would be seen as a bit obnoxious this early in their career, especially when around people who have gallantry medals.

  2. Also the UK military has moved towards not wearing medals in military uniforms in certain circumstances.

  3. This all seems so confusing. I’m not even sure if I would know even if I wasn’t American.

    I want to thank everyone that posts here. It’s always a treat to read the comments.
