Should more places do this, 1 day where it's £100 rather than '000s that some spend.

  1. I did a quickie marriage in New York, the one where you all line up and take your turn. Cost about £30 and it was great fun.

    Weddings are a scam.

  2. People don’t spend £1,000s just for a ceremony. I could get married in my local registry office on a Tuesday with two witnesses for £152.50 if I wanted. For a proper ceremony with guests it would start from £411.50 on a weekday. Costs for religious ceremonies are likely to be similar.

The real cost comes from providing everyone with food and entertainment. If all you want is to go and get married, there are plenty of (relatively) cheap options.

  3. My brother is getting married soon and they’re inviting around 100 people. I know nothing about weddings, never been one either, but my GF told me this would probably cost about 20k. Is this true for the average wedding? I know it’s expensive, but spending 20k you don’t have is absolutely crazy

  4. I got married there in 2005 and it was about £150. Had our reception over the road in the Landmark.

  5. People act like weddings are only there for the legal process of getting married and nothing else, so thousands spent is a scam.

Personally, me and my partner are spending a lot of money to throw probably the best party of our lives, and have the only opportunity we’ll ever have to see all of our family and friends in the same place. If you took the concept of a wedding out of that, many more people would be on board, or at least not so violently against it

  6. This was literally a lottery. There was a ballot to get in and they were allocated a random time, anywhere between 8:30am and 10:30pm.
