Well, it begs the question: does he even have a family remaining to go back to given the stories of collective punishment? For 150 char limit: i’m curious about the expectations of north korean defectors, does anyone have a good source on this?
This is just messed up on so many levels. North Korean defectors get all kinds of help from the Korean gov’t including housing and education and help with employment. I don’t see how this was at all worse than the hellhole that the DPRK is, or this man is just clearly batshit insane. And at so young an age, only 30’s? Something ain’t right about this dude.
SK is apparently a bad place to be when you are jobless or poor, according to the SK movies I saw. Combine that with culture shock and missing your family and friends. When you live in a big city without many contacts or friends, miss your family and maybe live in destitution or poor living conditions, and then think your relatives might suffer repression just so you can have a shitty life still, returning might not seem implausible.
