  1. TLDR:

The study of driving behavior at 6000 intersections across three major cities of USA found that gliding toward intersections, rather than stopping abruptly, and reducing idling time at intersections can reduce air pollution by as much as 22%.

  2. This is the same problem most of climate action faces. It’s not finding ways to cut carbon usage. It’s the human factor. How do we get people to do these things?

Sure, we could devise some device or technique to help drivers do this – but that takes a ton of time and research to get it implemented in any meaningful way.

And that’s probably worth doing. But thinking it’s something that can happen immediately because everyone can theoretically start doing it now is just plain ridiculous. That’s not how humans work in aggregate.

  3. Ugh the ellipses in this title are so aggravating… like uh…duh! It’s so simple!

All we have to do is just get literally everyone in the world to completely change how they have approached intersections since they started driving unless their brakes or transmission were out!

By the way I did this for several months, other cars don’t allow you to do this. At least in LA, they just speed up and cut you off before the red light making you hit your brakes the same way you normally would.
