What do Americans think of Eileen Gu, the mixed-race (father is American, mother is Chinese) athlete who won 2 golds and 1 silver medal for China in the Winter Olympics? Do you think she’s a traitor? Or do you think it’s totally fine? Or any other thoughts about her?

  1. As a American, I think we are totally fine with that. And I was very interested in her amazing performance 🇨🇳🇺🇸

  2. If people think she (or anyone who represents a different country) is a traitor bc she chose to represent China over the US, then they’re crazy. It’s not that deep lmao

  3. OP your post history is pretty weird – you’ve posted this and similar questions on lots of Subs. are you obsessed by mixed Chinese ethnicity?

  4. I fully support any athlete who uses the rules to compete for the country that will welcome her athleticism.

I have a lot of thoughts about racists. Therefore, I have a lot of thoughts about YOU, OP.

  5. Honestly – i think the only time that people get upset about a dual national competing for a country is in soccer. otherwise, its zero issue.

  6. Traitor is….woaw… that’s a very strong word for someone that didnt choose to have dual origins…

  7. why would she be a traitor for practicing her sport? People do this all the time when they don’t qualify for a particular team. I believe there was a gymnast who won a medal for Algeria, who trained in France.

  8. As long as you are a citizen of a country, you should be able to represent that country. I’m not fully sure her path to citizenship between the two countries, but good for her.
Now I want to see her win for another country.

  9. OP, do you even care about freestyle skiing? (For those not in the know: that’s Eileen Gu’s sport.)

  10. Eileen Gu, is an amazing athlete, and it’s her choice who she wants to represent. Both China & USA have tons of talents and won’t be hampered by one athlete’s absence. Let Olympians breathe and focus on sending positive vibes. Who are we on interent to call someone traitor?

  11. There were a bunch of Americans that chose to represent other countries. Just because she did it for China doesn’t mean she’s a traitor. It’s her choice.

  12. The wording of this post is super sketch/problematic, but I do take issue with Eileen Gu (as opposed to others competing under dual nationalities) representing China.

She grew up with all the advantages of being American, but chose to represent China (which is entirely capable of fielding as many athletes as it wants). Having an American represent China is a way for their government to say, “Hey, see? Even though she’s American, she wants to be Chinese” and is an implied support of their leadership.

Also, if you listen to her interviews when she made the switch for Beijing – she said she wanted to be an inspiration to other Chinese girls that, “Hey, you can do this too!”, but she grew up in the US, not in China, so her experience is totally dissimilar to them.

  13. American here. 1st I have heard of her. With those amazing accomplishments I totally respect her as an athlete. Also she just happens to be ridiculously good looking – So good for her. That’s about it. It happens every olympics where someone with dual citizenship competes for the other country. No big deal.

  14. Not a “traitor” but like that male pole vaulter she should be competing for USA.

On an individual level, I like here. Great athlete, and sexy.

  15. I think giving up her US citizenship (assuming she went through with it) was an unwise choice. But ultimately hers to make.

Plenty of Americans compete for other teams. A guy from Louisiana competed for Sweden in a track and field event. Gus Kenworthy is a dual US/UK citizen who competed for team GB his last Olympics.
