  1. Dozens of people, nearly the entire community, gathered today for the funeral of Lt. Col. Ihor Hryb, commander of the 186th Territorial Defense Battalion of the 123rd Territorial Defense Brigade. While officials have not commented on the circumstances of his death, an investigation is underway. According to a soldier from the battalion, who requested anonymity, and various sources, Lt. Col. Hryb reportedly took his own life at the headquarters on October 2, 2024.

The brigade was reportedly withdrawn from Kherson and intended to rotate the heavily depleted 72nd Mechanized Brigade, which was defending Vuhledar in Donetsk Oblast. According to an anonymous soldier from the unit, the battalion had only machine guns, with companies at just 20-30% strength, and was sent to face tanks and drones in Vuhledar. Upon arriving at the operational area, Lt. Col. Ihor Hryb refused to lead his soldiers into what he saw as a certain massacre. Higher command representatives later arrived at the battalion’s headquarters and threatened him with criminal charges. Shortly after, he took his own life at the headquarters.

Ihor Hryb had been fighting since 2014, participating in the battles of Savur-Mohyla, surviving Ilovaysk, and defending Krasnohorivka and Marinka. In 2021, he took command of the 186th Territorial Defense Battalion. At 33 years old, he was well-respected and popular among his soldiers.

  2. This is what Butusov said about this:

Regarding the circumstances of the death of the commander of the 186th Territorial Defense Battalion of the 123rd Territorial Defense Brigade, Ihor Hryb. I am gathering information and talking to soldiers from the 123rd Territorial Defense Brigade. Soon, I will write about the circumstances of Hryb’s death known to me, about the actions of the 123rd Brigade in the Vuhledar area, about the adequacy of decisions regarding its deployment, the brigade’s commandability and organization, and the consequences for the city’s defense.”

  3. The sister battalion of the 186th, the 187th Territorial Defense Battalion, reportedly also was sent to Donbas without the necessary equipment: [https://suspilne.media/mykolaiv/850417-samovilno-zalisili-vijskovu-castinu-na-donbasi-u-voznesensku-voini-123-i-brigadi-tro-vijsli-na-miting/?_x_tr_hist=true](https://suspilne.media/mykolaiv/850417-samovilno-zalisili-vijskovu-castinu-na-donbasi-u-voznesensku-voini-123-i-brigadi-tro-vijsli-na-miting/?_x_tr_hist=true)

The Ukrainian high command is either desperate or stupid or ignorant (or all combined) to make such decisions.

  4. This is a horrific loss for Ukraine. I hope they honestly evaluate this and install safeguards to prevent this senseless loss of life, talent and patriotism. Ukraine lost big time here. This person had a clear view of the tactical/ strategic field of combat. His eyes, knowledge, abilities and skills are NOT replaceable. Nor is the love and respect of his subordinates.

    This is self-sabotage

  5. Ukraine dearmed itself for what??? A big ass fucking by those who promised protection.
