Politicians and right wing influencers have spread conspiracy theories online suggesting that Hurricane Milton has been geoengineered by nefarious forces, with the end goal of preventing Republicans from voting in the presidential election.
“Milton looks like another man made storm and it looks like Trump voters are victims. Is this really what’s happening?” wrote one user on X. “Biden and Harris are messing with the weather! Hurricane Milton was sent to Florida just like the other hurricane To wipe Florida out !! They know those are mostly Trump supporters who live in that state so 85% of them won’t be able to vote Next month,” wrote another.
The “weather weapon” theory and others began proliferating when Hurricane Helene made landfall nearly two weeks ago, leaving at least 230 dead. And now, some of these wild narratives are not only reverberating on fringe corners of the internet, but being spread by major accounts—chief among them, GOP Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia. Climate experts tell WIRED that it’s impossible.

Typical engagement bait that obviously avoids anything specific. What technology? How? Where? When?
They are only interested in the “why”, jumping to the conclusion given by the hysterical, narcissistic persecutory delusion that protects them from any accountability and responsibility.
Their entire understanding of reality is rooted in this moral depravation and the psychological mechanisms that legitimize it.

Apparently we’ve come a long way since changing the course of hurricanes with Sharpees.
Fossil fuel companies and the industry groups they created have had decades to prepare for what they knew would eventually come: *the consequences*.
Given the status of some of these companies as the most profitable entities in the history of commerce; I would be genuinely surprised if they didn’t have an entire arsenal of contingency plans lined up about how to deal with the ramifications of climate change. Especially as it heightens and accelerates in the years ahead. Plans that involve a host of strategies across various fronts. Legally, socially, politically, etc. From both a defensive posture, and an adaptive one.
Disinformation is likely just the beginning stages of what they have ready to deploy on the public as our society organizes to make them pay for all the damages we suffer today. And for those to come.

The Industrial Revolution has geoengineered the climate with decades and decades of carbon pollution around the world beginning two centuries ago and increasing yet still. We can’t control the weather, but we have caused chaos in the climate by making the atmosphere unstable with the wholesale burning of fossil fuels, mass consumption of greenhouse gas emitting activities, and destruction of carbon sinks. We’ve actually done the opposite of make individual storms predictable. Excessive greenhouse gas concentrations have absorbed so much heat into the land, sea, and air that we now live in a realm of increasingly altered environmental patterns unrecognizable to preindustrial existence.
The part about this that’s even more idiotic than just the obvious initial stupidity is that they’re almost sorta correct, but not in any way they’d want to be. The govt *has* been subsidizing fossil fuels for decades while ignoring the warnings from climate scientists and that *has* increased the likelihood and severity of storms like Milton etc. Glad they’re finally seeing there’s a problem.
