Together with statutory parental bereavement pay/leave and statutory neonatal care pay/leave, these are some surprisingly compassionate policies to come out of the last (largely discompassionate) government.
Have to understand that that sort of horrible shit can cut a person in two, physically (obviously) and psychologically – straight up. As either parent, try functioning ‘normally’ for months afterwards. “What did I do wrong?!” and other fkn stupid shit goes through one’s head.
Its only right to acknowledge a lost life and to recognise the parental grief.
I don’t understand the purpose of the certificate and the article is paywalled. What is this supposed to achieve/ change?
I lost my daughter’s twin. I feel lucky that we have an ultrasound scan, but I found it incredibly hard to process grief when there was no physical evidence of her. I honestly believe this would have helped me so much at the time.
We’ll be applying for one today. Even just to have a formal piece of paper with her name on – it makes a big difference.
There was very little care and support for us from the hospital. It felt like you were taking a car in for a service or something.

Doesn’t matter how early the miscarriage is, I’ve been through this with my wife and it is absolutely heartbreaking. All the same pain and emotions as any bereavement.
I’m a little conflicted on this. I’m supportive of giving grieving parents acknowledgement of loss and more support but I worry that this may bolster the arguments of pro-life campaigners if we give foetuses in the early stages of development official recognition of life.
