Cancelled DB ticket

Hi everyone! I’m a student in Germany for the semester and I am having trouble getting a refund for my cancelled ticket. I’ve attached photos, but basically I bought a ticket for a trip to Vienna in November and it said it’s been cancelled. However, when I go to change my ticket it says there are not any available and no information on the cancellation. How can I get a refund? Thank you!

  1. Do you still need to go there? Because you can simply use that ticket on any other train this day.

  2. You can take a different train with your cancellation documents. It should have a text specifying the conditions. It happened to me, and it was very stressful until DB explained it to me.

  3. That’s a well-known synchronisation issue between the part of the app that handles cancellations and the part that handles route planning. Some times, the “find alternatives” function starts working several hours letter, leading to this confusing UX you had because you checked your notifications quickly.

Your passenger rights aren’t affected, despite this annoying bug. You can either go to the main screen and search for new connections directly, making sure you are only looking at suitable alternatives (no need to book anything new, just for you to know your new schedule), or you can wait for the start-time of your original to elapse, so you can see the passenger rights options in the app (you can say that you didn’t embark on the trip for a full refund).

  4. That means that exact train was canceled. Oftentimes they run a replacement train at the same time or use any train you want

  5. Many already answered your question, but I just wanna add something – now that you have a ticket for any train, try to stick to DB/ÖBB and public regional operators – some private operators, like the Westbahn in Austria or FlixTrain in Germany don’t accept a DB ticket, even if it’s a Flex one. Westbahn has some deal with ÖBB because of the floods, I don’t know if it’s still in effect though.
