Registering marriage in Germany After Denmark (when one person is German)

Hello, everyone!

I recently married my wife in Denmark, and I’m looking to record our marriage in Germany. I have German nationality, and my wife is from Japan, currently living in Japan.

I’ve done quite a bit of research and came across the following resources:

  1. Berlin Service Page: Marriage Abroad Registration — This indicates a voluntary application process with fees up to €150 for re-certification.
  2. Berlin Civil Registry Info: Civil Register Update — This states that you don’t need to have your foreign marriage re-certified; you’re considered married in Germany once entered into the civil register.

My Questions:

  • What is the correct process to update the civil register in this situation?
  • Can this be done at the Bürgeramt, or do I need to go to the Standesamt? I can't find a specific appointment to do this.
  • Has anyone gone through this process recently and can share their experiences?

I appreciate any insights or advice you can offer. Thank you!
