Deposit return scheme leads to ‘massive reduction’ in plastic bottles and drinks containers found on shores by Coastwatch

  1. Very successful scheme this, and it’s rare I’d want to give government any plaudits. Few moaners down the back thankfully didn’t derail its success.

  2. I love seeing the new workforce, grabby extension in hand. One of them has been begging locally for years. Looks a lot happier now doing what he does and personally I’ve yet to see bins torn apart and left in a mess.

  3. The only way I’d like to see the scene improved is if they gave it an app that you can tap to get your money. I know they want you to spend it in the shop you recycle it at, but there should be an easier way to bank the cash instead of getting the cash back and physically saving it.

  4. There is definitely room for improvement. But it’s ok. The fact there is less rubbish on the shores is great though.

Starting to see people throw things about again. In the last week I’ve seen a few cans and some bottles left on buses and near bus stops.

  5. Can’t stand people complaining and moaning about this scheme.

I’ve seen homeless people going around with bags of bottles which they can buy themselves food with… There’s definitely less bottles on the streets, and there’s more stuff getting recycled.

People constantly complain about climate change etc etc, but then don’t want to do their bit. Paying an extra 15c which YOU CAN GET BACK to better the environment is a no brainer. There’s not a single thing to complain about this

  6. The environmental part was always going to work the actual keeping users happy has been shite and still is.
It’s still a pain in the arse to return the bottles. Why are there not more return machines? Why only in Supermarkets, why not bring centres?

  7. I was in Super Valu the other day queuing up behind someone with a massive black bag of cans..

    Ugh, soda pressing..

  8. Last time I was in Galway, I saw someone use their can as a way of giving to one of the buskers. Can’t say I would have thought of that, but it’s a damn good way of using it.

  9. I’ve had my problems with this scheme and it’s implementation, but this is honestly great news.

  10. All the junkies are pulling that stuff out of the sea.

I say we provide every junkie with flippers and a snorkelling kit and have Dublin bay completely cleaned out.

  11. Now imagine if we had have implemented these machines 15 years ago like other European countries.

  12. There really is no pleasing a lot of people in this country.

The scheme has been broadly successful in its aims and we *still* have moaners complaining about it in this thread.

There’s plenty enough to complain about without critisicing something that’s working.

  13. I see lots of homeless people taking bottles out of bins and such thus helping recycling. It genuinely is worth it despite making it a minor inconvenience for many of us.

  14. Only problem I have with the scheme is all the gobshites in work who act like I’m the fucking one who passed the law.

  15. There is nothing in that article to back up the headline or am I missing something? It goes on about coast watch and how to get involved.

I was expecting at least 1 line saying something like “this year there was x incidence of plastic litter recorded down y% on last year” but nothing

  16. It does show how hard it is to implement one of these national schemes. You launch and are hit with an avalanche of criticism from vested interests trying to undermine the project through pointing out normal snagging issues. Then you have to push through that and make on-the-fly adjustments. Fair play to all involved. I do find myself looking now at the big slabs of small water bottles in the supermarket and wonder who is buying these – the deposit is more than the water.

  17. I love it. I wish the machines still took ones that didn’t give money back to further help recycling. ♻️

  18. “This scheme Joe ,,,,, it’s a disgra………oh ? Really ? ……….

Well what about those flippy lids ye can’t screw on,,,,,,,, F#%k the polar bears and yer man Attenborough “
