Sadiq Khan-backed plan for 20,000-home ‘new town in London’ submitted

The Mayor of London described the development (Barking Riverside) as ‘a model of how to fix our housing crisis’ and ‘a blueprint’ for the Government to follow.

  1. Interesting plans for Barking and Dagenham these. I’m usually not a fan of soulless high rises but these look like they’ll be alright if they do as they promise and actually build a town/ community with proper amenities. Putting thousands of flats on the former Barking power station site that’s not being used seems sensible

  2. I’ve friends who live on Riverside and it’s still definitely work in progress and not the prettiest or most interesting area, but there’s clearly visible potential there in terms of space to build. The new overground connection and regular buses up to Barking station mean it’s got a decent job of being an OK place to live if they don’t totally fuck the housing and amenities up.

  3. Who cares? the guy doesn’t work for us, he works for the “powers that be”.

Imagine an “adult” still thinking the world is as they say it is LOL, embarrassing.

Either you learn or you end up like op, just another human.

  4. This looks great!

Hopefully they can get moving on this as quickly as possible and also keep pushing for more housing development in London. We’ve had a lost decade and a half, but the likes of Khan and Starmer seem to actually want to start fixing things!

  5. Just wait for the Council to take months and then reject it due to some minor, in the grand scheme of things, insignificant concern (e.g. disturbing the local hedgehogs).

Edit. There you have it: “Barking and Dagenham council will decide on the plan early next year.”

  6. Though it has good cycling and public transport it’s essentially built around car ownership. There are no shops or public amenities about other than a few landscaped gardens. The river front and natural ecosystem is being destroyed. It’s dystopic.

  7. Hopefully lives up to the promise.

Unfortunately a lot of developments over promise and under deliver when it comes to local infrastructure and amenities

  8. 20k new homes what about a new hospital to be able to deal with the ever expanding population
