  1. This reminds me of stories of African athletes hiding in Europe the moment they get there for sport events.

  2. The average salary is 50 USD per year. If you give them 500 USD, I am sure that you can get a LOT out of these guys.

  3. They received their first proper meals, hence the energy to flee.
Russians face a dilemma: feed them properly, they flee at first chance. Starve them, they won’t have the energy to fight

  4. I’m curious who Kim is sending, maybe he is sending undesirables knowing they will be fodder and they aren’t actual trained NK soldiers. Would mean a high chance for defectors. When NK sends people they want back they choose those who are loyal but also with a lot of family in NK. So if they don’t come back their whole family goes to forced labor camps.

  5. Awesome! Great for them!

I was just debating to myself about what would be the best Kdrama to show on a big inflatable screen right across the defensive lines from the North Koreans to show them just how much better things are in the South. This is obviously ignoring the logistics, practicality and inherent danger of such an undertaking; and is just meant as a fun thought experiment. My pick would be True Beauty. And “ugly” girl learns how to do her make up right as she transfers schools to get away from bullies. Now she is pretty and well liked, but it turns out people like her even with out her make up. Now it is nowhere near the best Kdrama, but it is a pretty South Korean girl living a pretty and funny South Korean life.

Then you followed up with Crash Landing on You, where a gorgeous South Korean woman (Son Ye Jin is a national treasure) accidentally paraglides into the North. There she falls in love with a captain, before they find a way to get her back to the south. But the captain gets sucked there, so his troops need to sneak in to help him get back. Hijinx ensues! The only reason not to start with this one, is that too much of it takes place in the North, and I think they should hook them with how great things are on average in the south first.

  6. Well, once a NK soldier defected to the South to eat chico pies or thinking to get them and resell them at the black market in the South like he was doing in the North.

  7. While having some sympathy for their families who are almost certainly going to be punished, I can’t help but feel this is their best chance of making it out alive.

18 down, from reports we have seen, almost 10000 to go.
