  1. ***The Telegraph reports:***

A secondary school planned to turn its heating off as part of a “Blue Nose Day” event to teach pupils about [climate change](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/climate-change/).

Wolsingham School, a co-educational academy in County Durham, had organised for the stunt to take place on Friday to reduce its carbon footprint and raise awareness about “the importance of being more sustainable”.

Parents received a letter earlier this week informing them of plans to turn the heating off throughout the school day on “Blue Nose Day”, with pupils advised to wear jumpers and extra layers to keep warm.

However, Wolsingham School wrote to parents on Tuesday announcing that the event had been called off after staff raised some concerns.

In a letter seen by The Telegraph, the school said that “after careful consideration and speaking to several parents regarding their concerns, the Blue Nose Day scheduled for Friday 18 October 2024 will now not go ahead as planned”.

It added that pupils will no longer need to wear extra layers on Friday and that the heating will remain switched on as normal.

Wolsingham School said the event had been planned by students on its [climate action](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/global-health/science-and-disease/climate-change-training-for-medical-students-europe/) team and that Friday had been “carefully chosen” since average temperatures were forecast to remain at 59F (15C).

“Blue Nose Day” will now take place in the summer term and parents will be contacted with further details nearer the time, the school said.

  2. I’m sure the health and safety executive will be thrilled that a school is likely to in its ability to keep to a minimum inside working temperature for the staff under the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992. Approved Code of Practice.
