America just set an EV sales record. Americans purchased more than 346,000 EVs during the third quarter of 2024. EVs now make up almost nine percent of all cars sold in the US. Global EV sales were up 30 percent in September.

  1. There is a lot of Fear Uncertainty and Doubt about “slowing EV sales” in the American press. It is 90% bullshit. The *growth rate* has slowed, but growth is ongoing. This is difficult for carmakers, who had to invest big in order to achieve economy of scale, their EV plants are not producing at the rate intended. But this isn’t really bad news for the energy transition.

Carmakers aren’t going to throw in the towel on those EV plants. EVs have less than half as many parts as infernal combustion vehicles. Batteries are complex, but they’re they’re made by robots instead of pesky machinists. The EV transition is a permanent victory of capital over labor, so capital will make it happen. That is problematic on a social level, but in this particular case it has a big climate benefit.

  2. Charging stations in my opinion are hindrance. Wonder why Elon changed his charging operations before election? Maybe 3 million less gallons of gas a week that’s a good deal.

  3. *You hear that, Germany?*

Goddammit, the self-proclaimed “car country” is really dropping the ball.

  4. Impressive! And this is a big reason why we may have reached “peak oil” globally, love it.
