The United Kingdom Counter Terrorism Policing is investigating Russia’s involvement in a fire at a DHL facility in Birmingham caused by a bomb planted inside one of the plane’s cargo containers, according to The Guardian.

A previously unreported incident at DHL’s Birmingham warehouse occurred on 22 July. There were no injuries as a result of a fire caused by an incendiary device in one of the shipments.

According to The Guardian, the parcel arrived at the warehouse by air, but it is unclear if it was on a freight or passenger plane or where it was headed.

No one has been arrested in connection with the Birmingham fire, and the inquiry is still underway.

“Officers are liaising with other European law enforcement partners to identify whether this may or may not be connected to any other similar-type incidents across Europe,” the police spokesperson said. The UK authorities fear that the Birmingham incident is part of a larger campaign by Russian agents across Europe.

Earlier this week, Thomas Haldenwang, chief of Germany’s internal intelligence service, highlighted an instance in which a parcel caught fire at the DHL logistics centre in Leipzig, but the fire did not start on the plane transporting the parcel owing to a coincidence.

According to prior media reports, the package containing the incendiary device that caused the fire in Germany was mailed from Lithuania and is currently being probed there.

Recall, Thomas Haldenwang, the head of Germany’s domestic intelligence agency, pointed to a significant increase in Russian espionage and sabotage activities in Germany. At present Germany is investigating several fires caused by incendiary devices hidden inside parcels at a warehouse in Leipzig earlier this year, the country’s prosecutor general said. Thomas Haldenwang told a parliamentary committee that Germany had only narrowly escaped a plane crash when an air freight parcel caught fire. The prosecutor general’s office declined to comment on a possible link to Russia, saying that no additional information could be given due to the ongoing nature of the investigation into “attempted aggravated arson”.

German authorities warned businesses in August that dangerous parcels might be in circulation after several incidents in which freight sent by private individuals in a number of European countries caught fire while in transit.

  1. Wouldn't that be a typically Russian outcome? Attempts to instill terror, accidentally triggers Article 5 and gets summarily pounded into the ground as every single country on their western front advances simultaneously, with full US backing. Last time Russia tried to test-fire an ICBM it literally blew up in the silo and took out their whole base. Exactly as I predicted it would. Those goofs didn't even keep their conventional arsenal up, with all the corruption. You just know that ICBMs (which nobody realistically expects to ever use) would've been cannibalized for scrap. Or at least had the maintenance funds embezzled to nonexistence.
Also those floors at DHL are damn genius. Ball bearings built right into the floor so huge crates of stuff can be shuffled around with manpower only.

  2. A lithium battery could cause a fire on a plane. This has happened before. I wish I were with you in Майдан Незалежності. I attended the square each time I travel to Kyiv. I've been multiple times over the four times I've traveled to Kyiv. I hope the government can do more. But there is a lot going on. I am sorry sorry. Never give up. Love Love Love

  3. With all due respect to your losses or distressed hope of finding a loved one serving his or her country, you do grasp I am sure that if Russia is permitted to win and take over your country definitely most if not all you women and your children will be unwilling actors in a crime against humanity the severity of which your great grandparents will have not been a witness to. When a people is struggling against a megalomanic tyrant with absolutely no consideration for the lives of his own citizens men, women and children alike, you can’t begin to fathom the depravity that will be dispensed upon your children, parents, and other loved ones. Thank you for your patriotic patience in not knowing for sure where your serving family members are or even their status. It is rather normal that that information is crucial information not to be given to the sworn enemy eventual masters of yours and your families destiny.

  4. Well if this was a state sanctioned attack it will provide valuable information for western security services. The is always a cost to doing things like this it’s definitely not a smart move.

  5. Who cares about Russian 'loved ones' ? They never GAF about Ukrainian loved ones. Russia needs to pay heavily for its crimes against Ukraine.
