  1. Good video until the final few minutes of opinion
    1. Locally grown food will do almost nothing to local food prices. Labor costs are high and Hawaiian lands would be better suited for higher end cash crops on the island — think organic foods for good restaurants

    2. Saying the US broke the system means you actually think people 150yrs ago lived better than today. They worked most days just to have enough to eat. Hawaii and it’s people are are much better off today than 150yrs ago and that’s true for most of the world

  2. The Jones act also applies to the 5 million or so residents of the US territories. It pretty much chokes the economy of those places, crippling the economy by making exports too expensive.

The unintended result is that industry is almost impossible, jobs are scarce, the those territories are sunk into endless poverty.

It should be exchanged by a system that affects all states equally.

  3. I'm all for protecting American companies but when it results in a monopoly and consumers being price gouged the government needs to break up big companies into smaller companies or allow more international competition. I don't support American companies that take advantage of the consumer/worker.

  4. I expected a short video about small inconveniences but instead got a much deeper dive into Hawaii and the things that, people don't like to talk about. Big thumbs up

  5. I am of Hawaiian descent. Oh, that we, Hawaii, could return to the self-reliance and the simplicity of pre-European influence and the children of the land, the native Hawaiians, could move home and true aloha resurrect.

  6. I feel horrible to say this… but towards the end you start talking about how America broke the previous Hawaiian system that allowed to live life and be self reliant. …BUT, the truth is that if it wasnt America it would of been the Chinese, Japanese, British, Germans or Spanish hell maybe even the Portuguese… primarily the first 4 countries i mentioned would have overtaken Hawai'i. Theres no way to truly know if life would be better for the Hawaiian of another country would have taken over but there are signs thar point to that if China, Japan and the German would have taken over the Hawaiian would been unalived and eradicated from existence, the British maybe would of enslaved them and maybe sold them to other countries and or brought some back to their own country and possibly hawaii would have a similar look to it if british took over… maybe they would of instituted a sort of aparthied like they did in South Africa. And if the Germans took over… well thats self explanatory of what would of happened to the Hawaiian and their culture. If the germans took over i dont think there would be even a sliver or rock that would be left today to even showcase that Hawaiians even lived there. So really it seems like the best bet was for America to take over… the sad reality is that Hawai'i was always going to get taken over. Small island in the middle of the ocean while a whole huge world out there is geopolitically setting up their countries and armies and conquering lands… menawhile the Hawai'ins lived a relatively humble life with a kingdom albeit a somewhat primitive kingdome/lifestyle. They were never going to be able to defend themselves from the bigger superpowers on yhe global stage.

All that to say… what has happened to Hawai'i speaks volumes and is a testament to how far we have fallen as a human species. We contested an entire peacful kingdom and a beautiful land and culutre just to be able to have a powerful base in the middle of the ocean should war between opposed countries that are an ocean apart want to start what would have been WW3. Its pretty sad honestly.

  7. The Jones Act fuks over Hawaiians royally. Everyone living on Hawiian islands are subsidizing Californians who must process all their container ships, which creates jobs and tax revenue in California at the expense of raising cost to Hawiians. Why is it Hawiians job to pay for calironia? prices are already sky high in hawaii and you want them to pay to benefit california who has all kinds of industries. Hawaii could be a shipping hub if they didnt have the stupid Jones act.

  8. So in other words, the Jones Act has outlived its usefulness, and the free market would make supply chains freer and easier and goods cheaper. Same story as always.

  9. All of this, is exactly why so many generational families, who have been here for hundreds, or even several hundred, years are being forced to sell their ancestral homes for cheaper opportunities elsewhere. Our local news stations here have done a piece about basically this. It's called "Priced out of Paradise" quite in depth and eye opening for those who are unfamiliar with our situation here.
