Water management continues to pose challenges even in regions like Western Greece, where water resources are generally sufficient, according to Greek Minister for the Environment and Energy Theodoros Skylakakis.
Speaking at the recent 5th Olympia Forum held in Western Greece, Skylakakis highlighted the importance of effective water resource management.
The minister underscored the necessity of integrating energy and water supply systems to enhance resource management. Skylakakis predicted that energy costs related to desalination and water transportation will decrease in the future, subsequently lowering water prices.
“In the future, we will see many countries where the cost of energy will be zero or even negative,” he said. “This means that the combination of energy and water systems in the coming decades will be significantly more cost-effective than it is today.”
Skylakakis also highlighted the need for water companies to secure funding to develop the necessary infrastructure.

Addressing the specific needs of municipal water companies, Skylakakis indicated that a new law is expected to be passed by the end of the year, which will allocate 250 million euros for the establishment of municipal water companies.
According to the minister, the substantial investments required for water supply cannot be funded solely through public resources. This leaves local authorities with two options: to utilize their own funds, effectively taxpayer money, or to finance projects through loans, which will depend on the funding capabilities of banking institutions.

In related remarks, Harris Sachinis, CEO of EYDAP, Greece’s largest water and wastewater company, announced the organization’s goal of achieving a zero carbon footprint by 2035. He also discussed upcoming projects related to sewerage and waste treatment.
Sachinis emphasized the significance of desalination and water recycling in EYDAP’s strategy. “We are preparing a project for the industrial zone along seashore of Attica, where we will provide water for irrigation and industrial uses,” he noted.
Held in Ancient Olympia during October 18-20, the 5th Olympia Forum’s theme was “Empowering Cities & Regions”. The event was organized by the Patris newspaper in collaboration with the Delphi Economic Forum.
