Most people enjoy a hearty bowl of pasta every now and then.

It’s the epitome of comfort food – warm and capable of embracing a number of flavours. There’s hardly anything to dislike about this satisfying meal. With World Pasta Day taking place on October 25, it’s only right we pay homage to this beloved dish. However, it appears we might have been indulging in it incorrectly for quite some time.

For those who love spaghetti, you should think twice before reaching for a spoon to help twirl your pasta into a neat forkful, despite many opting for this method to keep their tea mess-free.

TikTok user Francees, under the handle _franceess_00, has let us in on how to dine like a “true” Italian, suggesting the spoon is redundant. In Italy, using a spoon to assist with winding spaghetti onto your fork is considered a major faux pas.

In a video showing herself eating spaghetti, she said: “Rule 1. You don’t need a spoon. Rule 2. You don’t need to cut spaghetti. The knife is not needed. Rule 3. Ground the fork to the bottom of the plate and spin around.”

The clip has sparked quite the conversation online since Francees posted it, with viewers eager to share their pasta-eating preferences.

One viewer remarked: “Actually, people in some regions do use a spoon as well.” Another added: “People use knives?”

A third queried: “Am I the only one who uses a spoon to spin the spaghetti?” While another shared: “I thought everyone did this everywhere.”

For those who are unaware, it appears that the majority of Italians do not consider it socially acceptable to use a spoon when eating spaghetti. This is due to the belief that it’s a breach of etiquette.

The use of a spoon can lead to clumsy mouthfuls as you may scoop up too many strands of pasta. This is why you might receive some odd looks from locals in Italy if they catch you doing so.

However, there are those who believe that using both a spoon and fork to eat spaghetti is a sophisticated approach. This method helps to prevent the sauce from splattering everywhere, and some people use it to sprinkle a bit of cheese to help bind the sauce too.
