The U.S. women’s soccer team, the reigning Olympic champions, extended its unbeaten run under coach Emma Hayes to 11 matches after defeating Iceland 3-1 in Thursday’s friendly in Austin, Texas.

Back on the field two-and-a-half months after winning a fifth Olympic gold medal at the Paris Games, the USWNT secured an entertaining win over their Nordic opponents in front of 18,580 fans at Q2 Stadium.

Alyssa Thompson put the Americans 1-0 up in the 39th minute with a sublime strike into the top right corner, as she sprinted on the left wing before cutting right, just outside the six-yard box.

It was the first international goal for Thompson, the only non-Olympian in the starting lineup. The 19-year-old is the fourth teenager to score for the USWNT this year, the most in a single calendar year since 2000 (6).

The fans at the stadium were silenced in the 54th minute when Iceland’s Selma Magnusdottir equalized with a curling shot from outside the box that flew well beyond goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher’s reach and inside the left post.

But Iceland’s lead didn’t last long as USWNT’s Jaedyn Shaw fired in the 85th minute before Sophia Smith sealed the victory in the 88th.

Casey Krueger did well to carry the ball through the right wing and slipped a pass inside to Shaw, who got past the Iceland defenders with deft dribbling before poking a shot underneath the goalkeeper. It was 19-year-old Shaw’s eighth international goal and sixth this year.

The game was done and dusted minutes before the full-time whistle when Smith sent her half-volley into the bottom right corner, bringing up her ninth goal of 2024, the most by a USWNT player.

Thursday’s victory was the team’s 10th under Hayes in 11 matches. The Englishwoman so far has a record of 10W-0L-1D.

The U.S. will face Iceland again in Sunday’s friendly in Nashville, Tennessee before concluding the international window against Argentina in Louisville, Kentucky three days later.

Coach Hayes rightfully heaped praise on Thompson in her post-match conference, saying the youngster has a lot to offer for the national side.

“I know she’s committed to looking for the next level in her play, and I think you see just how threatening and dangerous she is,” Hayes said, according to ESPN.

“It’s not an easy goal, drop in from the left-hand side and roof it in the top corner. But she is someone who is — her international career started at a very early stage. That’s why I believe it does take time.

“Maybe she wasn’t ready before, but I can see from tonight’s performance here that she offers a lot for us going forward, and I was super pleased for her goal and performance.”
