I’m looking to make biscuits and gravy just like I have at home. I moved here from America about 2 years ago and am yet to find this “breakfast sausage” that we have there. Does anyone know anything similar or the name for it here???

  1. “Breakfast sausage” isn’t really a thing here. I think for the kinds of sausage you’re looking for, maybe some of the bigger Prisma/Citymarkets might stock British sausages – at least S-Market used to have a deal with Tesco and you could (if lucky) find a UK brand on the shelves.

Sausages tend to be very local in nature and term encompasses a massive array of cuisines.

One place you could try is Hakaniemi Halli in Helsinki – there’s a couple of good butchers there. Even if they can’t help they’ll probably know somewhere (I used to but some excellent Chorizo sausages from there).

  2. I think you should try regular Finnish sausages(Wilhelmi, Kabanossi etc) and see if you like any of them. If you do like any of those, life would be a lot easier.

  3. Try frying some *siskonmakkara* on the pan. It’s a raw sausage. Mildly spiced, but tasty.

  4. Yeah, I think the hot dog flavour is because of the flour used in the sausages, it changes the consistancy to a smoother and more hot doggy taste. What you’ll be searching for raw sausage or ”raakamakkara”, there the consistency and flavour is more meaty. HK has some pretty good ones if you’re looking at bigger stores but local food halls have butchers that often can top those. Lidl also does a lot of nice sausages due to their German roots so might be worth checking out.
