Aris has taken its place atop the ladder after frustrating Panathinaikos in Athens, with their stalemate headlining a bizarre round which featured numerous upsets that saw all of Greece’s top teams drop points.
The Greens drew 1-1 with the Thessaloniki side at the Olympic Stadium on Monday morning (AEDT) in the premier fixture of the Greek Super League’s ninth round.
The result proved monumental for Aris as they somehow managed to climb into first place outright with AEK, Olympiacos and PAOK all succumbing to shocking losses.
The “Trifylli” took the lead in their clash with Aris in the 33rd minute after winger Tete, through an attack he began, received the ball and dribbled it into the box before finishing it into the back of the net.
Panathinaikos dominated proceedings for large portions of the match and had numerous chances to score again, though it was Aris that managed to grab the next goal.
It came via chief marksman Loren Moron with the Spaniard striking the ball into the bottom left from just outside the box in what was his team’s only shot on target all game.
Aris’ efficiency juxtaposed with the Greens’ failure to convert their subsequent chances, giving the visitors a valuable point earned on the road.
PAOK fell victim to a late comeback from OFI as they lost 1-2 at “Toumba” Stadium to relinquish first place to their crosstown rivals.
The Thessaloniki giants went in front in the 35th minute through winger Kiril Despodov in what looked like was the first step to an expected win.
The Cretans had other plans, however, and managed to make it 1-1 following a goal from forward Taxiarchis Fountas (77′) and his teammate, Eddie Salcedo, completed the total reversal of the match situation when he too found the back of the net two minutes later.
OFI was able to preserve their lead until the final whistle to secure an unbelievable win inside PAOK’s fortress.
The result added to the earlier upset caused by Asteras Tripolis when they stunned Olympiacos with an impressive 1-0 home victory, courtesy of a 21st minute goal from midfielder Evgeni Yablonski.
The loss adds to the Piraeus side’s recent struggles in the league (amassing two points from their last three outings), a run of form that has caused a severe amount of concern and disappointment that does not meet the club’s high standards.
OFI and Asteras Tripolis achieved the same outcome as Panserraikos had managed on Sunday morning against AEK, winning 1-0 at home, though their effort had the extra level of impressiveness in doing so while playing over an hour with just ten players on the field.
The Serres club took the travellers by surprise when they opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, thanks to a successful penalty attempt by striker Jefte Betancor.
The ecstasy of the goal was cancelled out just minutes later when winger Nikola Terzic received a red card following a VAR check (27′).
The game seemed destined from then for AEK to get back in, but Panserraikos stood firm and managed to withstand Enosi’s efforts to equalise and hang on for a famous victory (which is also their first at home this season).
AEK will be keen to address their recent shortcomings moving forward, with this being their second loss against lesser opposition (on paper) in their last three matches.
Atromitos scored a 0-3 away triumph over Kallithea in the final game of the round on Monday morning to end their three-match losing streak.
The Peristeriotes went ahead right before the break, thanks to centre half Mansur (45′), with midfielder Theocharis Tsingaras doubling their lead early into the second period (53′).
Substitute Nikolaos Athanasiou then wrapped up the win with a goal at the death (90+4′).
An injury time penalty guided Volos to a 0-1 away victory at the death over Panetolikos on Sunday morning to help lift them away from the bottom places on the table.
The Agrinio side was disadvantaged incredibly early into the contest as defender Nikola Stajic was sent off for a second yellow in the 26th minute.
Like Panserraikos, the Canaries put up a tremendous fight and looked on track to escape with a point until the Magnesia side was awarded a penalty deep into injury time.
Striker Pedro Conde stepped up to the spot and slotted the ball into the goal to seal the win, an unfortunate outcome for the hosts after holding on for so long (90+11′).
Levadiakos and Lamia were unable to split as they played out a 2-2 draw.
The visiting Fthiotida outfit struck first three minutes into the fixture via forward Gustavo Furtado, though it was cancelled out soon after through Levadiakos striker Alen Ozbolt’s spot kick (26′).
The “blue-greens” then took the lead themselves in the 58th minute after they earned another penalty, which was scored this time by Ozbolt’s replacement, Jose Romo Perez.
Lamia substitute Toshio Lake stepped up for his team and found the back of the net in the 71st minute, levelling the game once more in what proved to be the final decisive moment of the clash.
